And with a blink of an eye, we are already a quarter way through the 2022-2023 school year! The second quarter is here, and it’s a busy one! While this time of year tends to get chaotic, it’s important to remember how crucial student attendance is. Chronic absenteeism is a serious problem in South Dakota - a problem SFSD is committed to improving. Missing just two days a month can hurt a student’s grades and increase their chance of dropping out. Make sure your student is on the path to a bright future – and that starts in the classroom!

Our second and fifth graders had the awesome opportunity to work with Artist in Residence, Hector Curriel, for the past two weeks. They made decodable comic books that outline how they each can be Hurricane Heroes! We are proud of our JHE artists/authors!
Our third grade students have made
awesome pumpkin creations based on a character from a book! Students and staff have loved spotting characters from some of their favorite books!
We are so proud of our 4th and 5th grade students for their wonderful performance of Pirates: The Musical! A big thank you to director Mrs. Fitzsimmons and assistant director Mrs. Schaefer. We are grateful for the support from teachers for adjusting schedules and supporting students during rehearsals. We appreciate the support from parents that helped with set design, costumes, and so much more!
Today marks the 23rd Annual Lights On Afterschool event! Launched over 20 years ago, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families, and communities.
In honor of this event, Kids Inc. staff at all locations will be hosting celebrations throughout the next two weeks for students and families to participate in. Activities include talent shows, cookie decorating, pumpkin paintings, dance parties, art shows, scavenger hunts, and carnivals! These events are meant to bring awareness to the importance of quality after-school programs for kids.
Please help us say thank you to our Kids Inc. staff who play a MAJOR role in so many of our students' education journeys. We are incredibly thankful for each and every one of them for their dedication to the District and our students!

Before kicking off parent teacher conferences, JHE teachers engaged in some great discussions and learning about reading comprehension during our inservice. We are excited to apply our new learning when working with our students.

We have the best custodians at JHE! They go above and beyond every day. Staff and students showed their appreciation with cards and cookie cake! Thank you Thomas, Steve, Jose, and Kamal!
Our Everybody Reads tree became a Wish Tree this fall. JHE students made a wish for the Wish Tree for the start of the school year. New friendships, new learning, and new pets were just a few of the wishes at the top of the lists!
Yesterday afternoon JHE students and staff gathered in the gym to celebrate the money raised for the JHE Fun Run...by throwing pies in the face of select staff members! You can imagine the excitement of everyone at this event. We would like to extend a big thank you to the John Harris PTO for everything! There was so much work put in behind the scenes to make this a "Grand Land Adventure" for our school!
