Yesterday was a big day for 5th grade!
All 5th graders attended a program about a soldier in the Revolutionary War at the Old Courthouse Museum.
After returning, 5th graders rooted through all the 5th grade classrooms learning about simple machines. Pictured are students from 503 learning about wheels and axles in 505!

During last Friday’s “Sip and Sketch” celebration, each classroom chose a unique approach to express their creativity. 503 made colorful name banners with a variety of mediums and 401 chose videos off of Art Hub and was able to recreate them using canvases and paint!

From Ms. Powers: “Thank you, John Harris PTO and families! The PTO funded my grant for a tossback for my 202 friends!! Research shows that hand-eye coordination by tossing and catching a ball helps us become better readers! It is just like reading across a page from left to right!”

Last week, 502 and 503 went head to head during “explorer battles!”

Various happenings at JHE! Last Friday, kindergartners visited the Ronning library, Tuesday was National Compliment Day and many classes engaged in activities where they gave compliments to classmates, despite the cold, students are loving the snow hills, 5th grade orchestra practices for a performance, and yesterday we celebrated the great choices students have made in the last month with a “Sip and Sketch” celebration!

Since John Harris Elementary opened the fall of 1991, 5th graders have had the chance to participate in a project to design a flag that represents the theme for that school year. The newest flags are all hung in the Multi-Purpose Room with the older ones in the gym. The project is funded through the PTO but is implemented by both staff and parent volunteers. It was wonderful to have over 40 students who worked hard to come up with a flag design for this year’s theme. From the entries, 6 finalists were chosen. Congratulations to the finalists: Claire Adams, Layla Otto, Layton Phrommany, Ella Sand, Lucia Sanders, Arianna Stern.
The theme this year that the students had to represent visually is : “Trying something new isn’t always easy, but sometimes, it’s the hardest work that leads to the greatest reward!” The winner this year, decided by a vote of the JHE staff and PTO leadership is Arianna Stern! The flag will be displayed in the MPR along with a plaque.
Thanks again to EVERYONE who participated in this great tradition at John Harris Elementary!
